For several weeks now we have been going back and forth over where to move the chickens (since we are moving soon) and what type of pen to put them in. This weekend we had to make a decision since they were too big for their brooder and doubling in size almost every week. We have determine that our brooder will only work until 4 weeks of age for 25 chicks.
So, after much debate, we finally settled on a place and pen. The chickens will be at Daniel's Grandaddy's barn until we can build a house/cabin on our property. We spent all day Saturday planning and constructing the new home for the chickens. The design of the pen is nothing special but it works.
The pen is 15ft x 8ft. We drove 7 T-post in the ground and use a support post of the barn to attach the welded wire to which is 2in x4in and 48 inches tall. We used chicken wire around the top to make the pen 6 feet tall. We put deer netting over the top of the pen to keep the chickens from flying out. We also put chicken wire around the bottom and buried it about 6in out trying to prevent anything from digging in. We placed some wood and bamboo poles in the corners and across the back for roosting. We put one bamboo pole across the center of the pen to hang their water and feeder from.
The last time in the brooder at 6 weeks old.
All 25 chicks loaded up in the dog crate and ready to go. And we can't leave Browning out, he's ready to go too!
In the car, riding over to the barn. They did well but every time Daniel hit a bump they would jump and try to fly. We had feathers flying everywhere. We rode with the windows down to keep from passing out from the smell. Needless to say after this, the inside of the X-Terra got cleaned out!!!
First time in the new pen.
They look so small because the pen is so big!!
Everyone have a wonderful week!!
