Putting Down Roots!

Daniel and I have had a lot of exciting things going on lately.  God has so richly blessed us over the past few months.

God blessed Daniel with a new job and opportunity.  He is excited about the new possibilities that the job brings.  Oh and the raise helps too! :-)

As of March 31st, we are land owners!!!! We own 37 acres close to our families and where we grew up.
We finally have a place that is OURS together, a place to put down roots, a place to built our life and grow old together. We are so excited about it.!!!

Oh, I can see it now... cabin by the duck pond, dream house by the creek and waterfall, the farm I have always dreamed of, children laughing and playing in the woods, and lots of evenings sitting on the back porch watching the sun go down while listening to the sounds of the country! Oh and I can't forget the hunting as well.  Daniel is on cloud nine now that he has his own hunting land. We have lots of plans for our place. "Our Place" oh that sounds so good!
Possible home site for our dream home overlooking the creek and waterfall!

Creek just down the hill from the home site.

 River on the south side.

Clearing for Daniel's food plot down by the river.

Monday, phase 1 of our farm arrived... 26 chicks!  We ordered 10 Buff Orpingtons, 10 Barred Plymouth Rocks, and 5 Ameraucana but some how we ended up with an extra Ameraucana.  The Buff Orpingtons and Barred Plymouth Rocks lay brown eggs and the Ameraucana lay blue and green eggs (Easter eggs).  They arrived by mail on Monday at 2 days old.  We had to go to the Post Office to pick them up.  As soon as we opened the door to the Post Office, we could hear them chirping.  It was quite funny.

Right now they are in a brooder box that Daniel designed and built (Oh, I helped it too!) and they will stay in there for about 60 days.  Then the chickens will go in their permanent home, the coop.  Daniel is still trying to figure out the design the coop.  The Chickens will definitely be free-range. We are hoping that eventually we will be able to go completely organic but that can be expensive so for now they are Natural/Free-Range Chickens.  Once they start laying eggs (sometime in July), they will lay an egg a day.  So, we will have lots of eggs on our hands.   If you are interested in getting farm fresh eggs, let us know!

The Brooder Box that Daniel designed and built.

Browning meeting the new "babies." He wanted to lick them.  He thinks we got them just for him.  He gets so excited to go see them! Cute!

Chicks at 2 days old.

Chicks at 5 days old.
Yellow chicks are Buff Orpingtons, Black chicks are Barred Plymouth Rocks, and Brown and Tan Chicks are Ameraucanas.

I know nothing about Chickens. I am a cow and pig girl so this will be an new learning experience. They will be a good start to our Natural/Organic Farm. I have become passionate about having the best food since I found out about my allergies.  It's our goal to one day eat completely organic and offer that to other people!

  4. Oh, we have loved having chickens. It really is an adventure. You will love it. We didn't do chicks this year, because we have a little chick of our own on the way, but the kids are already begging to do it again next year. We'll have to "rotate" out some of our older hens to have room....

    Have fun!!!
