Making the Switch to Cloth

We are making the switch to Cloth Diapers! After much research, trail and error, and questioning others, I think I got this thing figured out (well sorta).

Long before we got pregnant, Daniel and I had discussed the idea of using cloth diapers.  We had several reasons for wanting to venture into cloth as our diapering option.  We are both have sensitive skin and figured that our child would too and we were right. We also consider the money saving benefits as well.  The initial cost of the cloth diapers is expensive but in the long run they save you money.  Now at 2 and half months old we are finally making the switch to cloth full time.  Jameson is just now getting big enough to fit into most cloth diapers.

There are several different types of cloth diapers... prefolds, fitted, pocket, all-in-one, one-size.  We purchased several prefolds with covers and a few bumGenius one-size pocket diapers before Jameson was born.  Prefolds are the more traditional, most economical, and work well on newborns.  Several sources had told me that bumGenius was the way to go.  So, we purchased these diapers from The Natural Baby which is a small store set up in Rattles and Rhymes located in Athens, GA. We had our small stash of diapers and with not a clue what to do we started out on the cloth diapering trail.

I had read several articles that said to wait to start cloth diaper until after the first week or two and with smaller baby it may take longer (Jameson was 6lbs 8oz at birth), so I knew we weren't going to start cloth right away.  After about two weeks I tried the prefolds with covers on Jameson and the diapers swallowed him whole, like went up to his armpits and the bumGenius were even worse. Over the next month or so we would play dress up with the cloth diapers which Jameson hated to check to see if the diapers fit him yet.  At about 7-8weeks the prefolds finally looked like they fit; we tried them and they leaked every time he wore them.

Thanks to several friends for loaning us their diapers to try before many the big investment! We determined that bumGenius, Sunbaby, and Just Simply Baby's diapers are the best fit for him.  We decided on using the one-size pocket diapers because these can be adjusted to fit from now until he is a toddler.  I like the prefolds but decided against them because Jameson is just too wiggly during diaper changing to get a good fit from the prefolds which then leads to leaks.

A friend told me about Just Simply Baby, a local company out of Oxford, GA, that has cloth diapers and array of other natural baby products. This company even has cloth diapers for premies and small newborn (we haven't tried them because now Jameson is out of the weight range for the smaller diapers). We have several of their diapers and love them.  They are great fit on Jameson and come in some cute prints.  Their minky fabric is so soft and molds better to Jameson's bottom.
